Project Overview

The Deakin South Telephone Exchange is a performance classification PC1 Telstra Exchange, also housing Defence and Federal Government data centres.  The exchange was originally completed in 1978 and much of the original infrastructure is still in use today.

The exchange did not comply with to the performance requirements of a PC1 facility as required by Telstra end-to-end standards due to both the age of the facility and having multiple building owners.

The Task at hand

Rudds Consulting Engineers' task was to provide a detailed design and construction assistance to enable the project manager (Transfield Services) and the electrical contractor (Martin Donnelly) to upgrade the exchange to meet the requirements of the Telstra end-to-end standards.  Due to the critical nature of both the Telstra exchange and the tenant data centres, minimisation of the impact of the works on both the Telstra operations and the tenant operations was the paramount consideration during the works.

The Construction Period

The project construction time was spread over 18 months with over 110 Network Hazard notices issued.  The close working relationship between Rudds Consulting Engineers, Transfield Services and Martin Donnelly enabled the works to be completed without a single unplanned network or tenant services impact.

Key Works:

  • replacement or upgrade of the six main distribution boards, including ATS
  • replacement of the existing generator main switchboard, including migration of the existing generator sets and control gear
  • replacement, upgrade or supply of the new secondary ATS units and the relocation of tenant supplies to ensure accurate electricity building
